Alum Rock Rebrand: How Vivace Turned a Stigma Into a Study Spot

Vivace Cafe & Pizzeria changed the conversation about Alum Rock. Inside the rebrand, the content strategy, and what it means for the area in Birmingham.
Alum Rock has carried a public image problem for two decades — disproportionate, often unfair, and persistent. Then Vivace Cafe & Pizzeria opened, ran a sustained content campaign, and the conversation started to shift. Today the cafe is one of Birmingham's most photographed study-and-coffee venues, and customers from across the city travel for it.
This piece is about how that happened — the content strategy behind it, the lessons for any operator on a stigmatised strip, and what it signals for Alum Rock going forward.
Why Alum Rock matters now
Alum Rock's customer base is large, loyal and underserved. The area's reputation in the wider Birmingham press has lagged what the food, cafe and retail scene actually offers. That gap is an opportunity for any brand willing to argue against the image directly.
Vivace took that argument. The cafe positioned itself as a premium study-and-sip destination, leaned into ambience-led visual content, and refused to mute the location. Saying ALUM ROCK in the caption — visibly, repeatedly — was part of the strategy.
The standout spot
Vivace Cafe & Pizzeria is the case study. It documents a contrast-driven social media approach: premium visuals, calm ambience, study-and-work positioning — landing into an area whose public image was the opposite of those signals.
The result was a brand that drew customers from across Birmingham. The case study notes the increase in physical foot traffic and the platform-by-platform reach data.
Reading it alongside Holy Smokes is useful — different strips, different cuisines, same discipline: own the visual language, post with cadence, do not apologise for the location.
Vivace has since become the reference point Alum Rock operators benchmark against.
What makes Alum Rock content work
Two things separate Vivace's work from generic cafe marketing. First, the visual identity is deliberate and consistent. The cafe looks like a brand, not a venue, and the feed reads as a magazine. Second, the captions own the location. Mentioning Alum Rock in every post turns a perceived weakness into a recognised signal.
Centauri's broader work on stigmatised or under-marketed neighbourhoods uses the same playbook. The case study is the cleanest local example.
What's next for Alum Rock
Vivace's success has opened the door for other operators. Watch for more premium-positioning cafes through 2026, plus brunch and dessert formats targeting the same study-and-sip audience. The area's retail and food scene is overdue national press coverage.
The lesson for any operator: a stigma can be undone with consistent brand-building, but the work has to be deliberate and sustained.
